Three officials from Panama’s National Customs Authority were arrested as part of an investigation into their alleged involvement in crimes against public administration. The operation was carried out by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, with support from the National Police and the customs authority itself.
The proceedings took place in the district of Panama and are part of an ongoing investigation. During the operations, authorities found a considerable amount of cash, although no information has yet been provided regarding the amount seized or its alleged origin.
The Office of the Attorney General reported that the three public employees are being investigated for their alleged involvement in acts that could constitute crimes against public administration. The operation was conducted by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in coordination with National Police officers and Customs officials.
The inquiry continues to unfold, while officials have yet to reveal the names of the arrested personnel or additional specifics regarding the circumstances that triggered the incident. The Office of the Attorney General will establish the upcoming phases of the legal process and any possible liability on the part of the parties involved.
The case arises as the National Customs Authority pursues ongoing inquiries and monitoring initiatives designed to uncover potential wrongdoing inside the organization. In a later release, the agency noted that the trio of officials is facing scrutiny over claims that they solicited illicit fees from a client, while pledging full collaboration with law enforcement during the proceedings.
According to that subsequent information, the officials allegedly requested improper payments and initially received an advance, with the purported promise that the total amount would reach 20,000 balboas. These allegations are part of the investigation and will have to be clarified during the corresponding proceedings.
The National Customs Authority reaffirmed its strict stance against any potential corruption, reminding the community that various reporting channels remain available for citizens to flag misconduct by government employees.
