A coordinated action conducted by Peru’s Public Prosecutor’s Office together with the National Police’s Anti-Corruption Directorate (Dircocor) led to the initial arrest of nine police officers who are being investigated for suspected corruption connected to their roles at the Vitarte Police Station in eastern Lima.

Authorities also carried out search warrants at ten properties situated across the districts of Independencia, Santa Anita, Ate, Pachacámac, Lurigancho-Chosica, and La Perla in Callao as part of the investigation, while investigators work to establish whether the officers were allegedly part of a scheme in which motorists stopped along the Central Highway were pressured to make unlawful payments.

According to prosecutors, the officers are suspected of requesting improper payments in exchange for not issuing traffic violation penalties. In some cases, drivers were allegedly instructed to withdraw cash from nearby banks when they did not have money on hand during the traffic stop.

During the operation carried out by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Corruption Crimes Committed by Public Officials in East Lima, authorities took possession of mobile phones, electronic devices, USB drives, cash, and administrative files linked to the police station, along with traffic control logs and other papers tied to vehicle inspections.

Following the operation, the Peruvian National Police reaffirmed its commitment to due process and the presumption of innocence for those under investigation. The institution also emphasized that the alleged actions of the detained officers do not reflect the values or conduct of the police force and pledged to continue cooperating with the investigation to identify and sanction any misconduct that undermines the integrity of public service.

The operation involved specialized prosecutors and Dircocor personnel, while the detained officers were placed under the corresponding legal procedures. The investigation remains ongoing, and the judicial system will determine the legal status of those involved.
